Writing vs. Orality

On Friday Dr. Sexson asked us to weigh in on the battle between writing and orality.  I feel as though I've posted about this before so I apologize if I'm repeating myself.  Anyway, here are my thoughts.

Writing has advanced our culture by leaps and bounds.  Without writing, these thoughts would not reach you.  Without writing the internet would not exist and consequently there would be no blogging for this class.  Writing allows us to jot down our thoughts and preserve them so that future generations can learn from their past.  Science would have almost no advancement without writing.  Thanks to writing we can send information and thoughts across the globe, connecting cultures in ways that would be impossible in a strictly oral culture.  As a result, I believe writing is completely invaluable to our society.  As for orality, I believe that the lost treasures of orality can be recovered with the proper amount of effort.  We can encourage public speaking in classes, encourage a oral tradition.  With this recovery of the lost art in balance with a society advanced by writing we can improve continue to improve culture by leaps and bounds in the future.
